West Indian Day Parade
Every year I've avoided this parade, but this year was different. Rusty and I ventured out just long enough to eat some corn and wear out our patience for reggae music (the only thing worse is jazz). The colors were unbelievable though. And it's so BIG! But really guys... what's with the violence? Every year... c'mon y'all!
Sculpturally Speaking
The Noguchi Museum. Floored.
Confronted with a room full of large rocks when I entered, I was determined to not treat this with the same level of indifference I do with most sculpture (I paid $10 to see this!).Walking through the gallery, the formless took on form and character. Each piece became something completely different with each new angle. Within one sculpture, I would see five different works. Unbelievable.
You Wanna Know Why America Rocks?!
Because we make ice cream sandwich donuts. WITH powdered sugar. And you don't even have to go to a state fair to find one.
Boom.
Staten Island: From Shaolin to Schicki Micki
Staten Island. That's right. I did it. All of it. From St. George to T-Ville. 40 something miles on the bike. And I made it back without bronzed skin, nasty accents, or noticeable STDs. Consider the day a victory!
Room for Rent in Spacious Prospect Heights Apartment: $580/month
the place: gorgeous apt overlooking the intersection of vanderbilt and bergen. available september 1. the room: 7.5' by 9' (or so).
Heaven, Hell, or Hoboken!
After living in this city for 5.5 years, I finally scoured up the requisite $2.50 for a PATH ticket ($5 round-trip), and made my way out to Hoboken. It's a six minute ride with the train, but something about it seemed so far away! It's a whole state away in fact. Two rivers!!!
Summer in the City: Getting Out!
The only thing better than a summer in the City is getting out of the City for the summer. Mike and I did just that: hitched our bikes to a ZipCar hatchback and drove out to the Catskills. It was one of those nasty, swampy, 95 degree days when we left New York. By the time we got to Phoenicia, the wind was breezing through the mountain passes, creating a perfect day for a ride.
Why Is It Hard to Make Friends Over 30?
This. Everything in this New York Times article titled Friends of a Certain Age. Give it a read. I'll catch up with you when you're done.
It's something that's really been on my heart since about the summer of 2010. I remember looking out and seeing lots of friends "out there", but not much "right here", close to home.
Summer in the City: Live Music Capital of the World
Bold statement, I know. Especially considering some of the people who are reading this. But when it comes to music, summers in New York just can't be beat. Honestly. SummerStage, Celebrate Brooklyn, River to River... and they're all free!
I Shouldn't Be This Excited To Go To Wisconsin...
But I can't wait! Cheese, beer, fireworks, and family. Get me there!!!
So sehen Sieger aus, Sha-la-la-la-la!!!
Well, this is what winners look like post-Germany vs Denmark at least. Let's not bring Italy into the conversation. Or Spain. But why concentrate on the negatives when there were so many celebrations!
Croatian Celebrations!
The European Championship is held in Europe, but outside of the host country, it can only really be celebrated in New York. Where else could you find an Irish bar, a Croatian bar, and a Spanish bar all within a three block radius? Each with enough cultural gusto to drown out the slightest sense of English. Since the first kick-off on June 8, the celebrations have been boozy and ethnic; all of them international trips via the subway.
Sweet Lullaby
You're my blue sky, you're my sunny day /Don't you know it gets me high when you turn your love my way.
