Snow (part II)

So today it snowed. Just like yesterday. And the day before that. It’s the first (real) snow of the season and it has a magical ability to transform the city, emphasizing characteristics that beforehand seemed dull and grey. The ruins now take on a solemn look to them, almost as if they’ve been baptized in purity. Even the plattenbauen have an uncharacteristically holy scepter around them.

Everyone seems fairly excited about it. The first morning of the week of snow, my 9.20 am class was meeting up in the old city to make a tour (auf english) of the sights. The tour eventually devolved into a snowfight, complete with a snowpie in my face. I was stunned. I didn’t know how to react. Everything briefly stopped. Then I threw down my bag and started chasing after the offending student until they too had a noseful of the fluffy stuff. It’s funny how a dose of snow can turn even the most serious of people into the young at heart.

The roomates and I later slipped away to build a snowman in the park across the street. He was HUGE, at least 6 foot. It was the first time I’d ever built a proper snowman. We dressed him in gloves and a scarf, thus making him probably just a bit warmer than I was. It’s Tomi, Me, Snowman, Maria and Marc.

Though you can’t really see the faces too clearly, I think the picture has a really cinematic feel to it. The blue tones of snow and dusk give it this nostalgic feeling…I think it’s beautiful. The kids in the picture are some of the coolest kids I’ve ever met. It’ll be sad when we all have to break apart for a while but that’s part of the game I suppose. Maria leaves on Saturday for Porto and Tomi leaves for Hungary in 4 weeks. But the split will only be temporary. We’ll be together again one day…in Porto…in Hungary…heck, maybe even Texas. One day…
